During the course of their disease, tumor patients are often confronted with the question of how further therapy should proceed. Medical information such as treatment options with their opportunities and risks play a vital role in these decisions, but so do the patient's own ideas and desires in regard to his or her future life. The patient must weigh up and decide, for instance, which burdens he or she is prepared to accept for what degree of increase in both the quality and length of life.
