Ethics Consultation at NCT Heidelberg

During the course of their disease, tumor patients are often confronted with the question of how further therapy should proceed. Medical information such as treatment options with their opportunities and risks play a vital role in these decisions, but so do the patient's own ideas and desires in regard to his or her future life. The patient must weigh up and decide, for instance, which burdens he or she is prepared to accept for what degree of increase in both the quality and length of life.

Appointments can be made either by telephone or by e-mail:

Many patients ask themselves how they should formulate their wishes and ideas and whether these will then be respected.

The clinical ethics consultation service will advise you in these and similar questions. The services offered include:

  • advice in regard to drawing up advance healthcare directives and healthcare power of attorneys,
  • counseling of family members appointed to be a guardian for a patient,
  • advice in ethical conflict situations such as decisions concerning treatment, limiting treatment, life-prolonging measures, special needs of transplant patients,
  • support in communication between patients, medical personnel, and nursing staff.
