The Department of Palliative Medicine at Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD) offers patients and their relatives at NCT Heidelberg comprehensive advisory and outpatient advice and treatment - especially in the case of severe, advanced illnesses, complex physical and psychosocial stress or in critical situations.
Palliative Care at NCT Heidelberg
Often additional expertise and resources are needed when it comes to
- treatment of refractory symptoms (pain, shortness of breath, nausea, etc.),
- oncological supportive therapy,
- acute medical crisis planning
- ethically relevant questions,
- psychosocial support,
- care planning (bridge care of the Department of Palliative Medicine), or
- the home care situation itself (SAPV team SAPHiR).

In this way, patients of the NCT Heidelberg can be cared for by the palliative medical outpatient clinic as a fixed consultation hour in the NCT Heidelberg as well as by short-term, low-threshold visits within the framework of the existing appointments in the day clinics at NCT Heidelberg. There is a close connection with the other counseling services at NCT Heidelberg (social services, psycho-oncology, nutritional, physical activity, ethics consultation, etc.).
In this way, comprehensive, multi-professional, early and cross-sector support can be provided even in particularly stressful situations.
Low-threshold, needs-oriented consultation as part of the specialist oncology case presentation.

Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m. and by appointment.

Advice from palliative care professionals, participation in tumor boards, transfer to home care by the Intermediate Care Service or multi-professional treatment of inpatients in all departments of the UKHD as part of a palliative care treatment by a palliative service.

Comprehensive, multi-professional (palliative) medical inpatient treatment of complex stressed patients, including care for their relatives. The palliative care unit at Salem Hospital is a cooperation project between the Heidelberg University Hospital and the Evangelical City Mission Heidelberg.
Our palliative care unit at Salem Hospital has space for 8 patients. Patients are referred from all contexts, from home, from care facilities, from hospitals and clinics, or from the emergency medical environment.
Our treatment focuses on
- Relief of stressful symptoms of the underlying disease, such as tumor-related pain or shortness of breath
- Relief of therapy-associated stress in the sense of oncological supportive therapy
- Specialized palliative care measures, for example for malignant wounds
- Psychosocial support and socio-legal advice
- Ethical issues / advice on living wills and health care proxies
- Clarification and organization of care at home, even in cases of great need for support
- Adapting the overall therapeutic concept to new conditions of incurability and progression
