Lung Cancer Center

As one of the first German clinics, Thoraxklinik Heidelberg has been certified Lung Cancer Center according to the German Cancer Aid since 2009. The certification mainly confirms the center’s compliance with the high quality requirements as well as an intense interdisciplinary and multi-professional collaboration of the involved specialist disciplines. Today, the clinic is Germany’s largest Lung Cancer Center. It is integrated in the National Center for Tumor Diseases Heidelberg.

The Lung Cancer Center ensures the treatment of patients with lung cancer at the highest medical level. The diagnostics and therapy not only take into account the latest findings from science and research, but above all the individual wishes and needs of the individual patient. Forward-looking new therapy options are offered to patients at the Lung Cancer Center in controlled clinical studies.

Specialists from the Department of Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine (Head: Prof. Dr. med. F. J. Herth), the Department of Thoracic Surgery (Head: Prof. Dr. med. H. Winter), the Department of Thoracic Oncology (Head: Prof. Dr. M. Thomas) and the Department for Radiation Therapy and Radiation Oncology of the University Hospital Heidelberg (Head: Prof. Dr. med. Dr. rer. nat. Debus) work closely together. In daily tumor conferences, each patient is treated after interdisciplinary discussions. An individual and tailor-made diagnostic and therapy concept is drawn up. For patients treated externally, the center offers the obtaining of an interdisciplinary second opinion.

In addition to the main treatment team, a multi-professional team of psycho-oncologists, respiratory and physiotherapists, nutritionists and pastors is available at the Lung Cancer Center for the patients. The offer is supplemented by smoking advice and options for giving up nicotine.
