Patient Research Council NCT Heidelberg

In recent years, if not decades, cancer research has developed enormously. The goal was, is and remains to better understand the disease "cancer" in order to be able to make more accurate diagnoses based on this understanding and subsequently develop better and more targeted therapies. Therapies that can improve and prolong the lives of patients or even cure cancer. Research involves studies. And this is exactly where patient participation in research comes in. By being involved as early as the study development stage and later in the study design and implementation, patients bring an additional perspective with their experience and knowledge, which can provide important impetus.
With the launch of One NCT in February 2023, patients will be involved in research as research partners in a structured and permanent way for the first time in Germany. Patients are involved in all phases of a research project - from the initial question to the final discussion of the results. They contribute their own experiences as well as additional perspectives on important issues. How can study protocols be implemented and how attractive are they? How comprehensible are study documents? Which research topics are important to us patients?

Against this background

  • the members of the Patient Research Council NCT Heidelberg support researchers and physicians in the development of clinical trials
  • the Patient Research Council represents the patient perspective in NCT decision-making bodies, working groups and events.

The NCT Patient Expert Academy (NCT PEAK) provides members with an educational program that is understandable to laypersons and offers an excellent opportunity to acquire knowledge about the basic principles of studies and science at various levels. The training program is available free of charge to all interested patients, including those outside the committee.

"For us patients, One NCT primarily means hope for comprehensive access to innovative treatment options and thus hope that the diagnosis of cancer can increasingly be taken away from us. The early and long-term involvement of patients in the associated clinical trials represents a unique opportunity in Germany to make these innovations not only effective, but also patient-friendly. I am very pleased to have become part of this enormously important and goal-oriented movement."

Dr. Yanrui Dong

Patient representative (Patient Research Council)

Thanks to major advances in cancer research, many modern therapies have been introduced that have significantly increased the life expectancy and quality of life of cancer patients. Based on my scientific background and my experience as a cancer patient myself, I would also like to make a contribution.

Bernhard Ortseifen

Patient representative (Patient Research Council)

After being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2020, I received good treatments and therapies at the NCT Heidelberg. I would like to contribute my experience to the planning of studies so that the interests of those affected are safeguarded in the communication between doctor and patient.

Fabiana Ruiz

Patient representative (Patient Research Council)

As someone personally affected by cancer, innovation in cancer research is a personal concern of mine. The importance of early diagnosis and the possibility of individualized therapies and even off-label treatments are critical and crucial for the survival of affected patients. Patient research projects are extremely important for this and I am very pleased to be able to make a contribution to this together with the Patient Research Council of the NCT Heidelberg.

Natalie Schweigert

Patient representative (Patient Advisory Board / Patient Research Council)

With my experience from the patient's perspective, I would like to contribute to continuously improving the needs and communication between patients and doctors and to making clinical trials more patient-oriented and thus making the entry threshold for participation in clinical trials patient-oriented and understandable for laypersons.
