Rowing Against Cancer - Charity Regatta in Heidelberg in September

On September 9, 2023, the Living with Cancer Foundation (Stiftung Leben mit Krebs), the Rowing Society Heidelberg (Rudergesellschaft Heidelberg 1898 e.V., RGH), and the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg will jointly host the charity regatta Rowing Against Cancer on the Neckar River in Heidelberg. The proceeds will go to the patient program Exercise and Cancer at the NCT Heidelberg. For all those interested, the RGH offers a preparation program. Registration is now open: www.rudern-gegen-krebs.de

The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg is a joint institution of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD).

This year, the teams will be putting their backs into it again: On Saturday, September 9, 2023, the 12th Rowing Against Cancer charity regatta will take place on the Neckar River in Heidelberg. Whether rowing beginners or professionals, patients or relatives, medical or nursing staff - everyone is cordially invited to get into the boat together and get involved for a good cause.

The races of the gig double fours start at 8 a.m. and run downstream from the Theodor Heuss Bridge over a distance of 300 meters. Experienced members of the RGH will act as helmsmen of the gig double fours. The RGH offers three training dates for those who do not yet have any rowing experience or would like to practice before the regatta. Sönke Hartung-Rey, department head of the RGH, says: "We are happy to introduce the participants to the sport of rowing and would like to support them with the training in the best possible way and prepare them for the competition."

The online registration for the charity regatta is open. The deadline is July 31, 2023. The entry fee of 400 euros per boat is made up of a 250 euro donation and a 150 euro contribution to costs. To register, visit: www.rudern-gegen-krebs.de.

A varied stage program and many offers in the regatta village accompany the sporting event. In addition to extensive catering, guests and participants can look forward to information booths and participation stations, which also offer many exciting activities for children. The OnkoAktiv association and other partners supervise these. Around noon, the ActiveOncoKids network will organize a rowing competition for affected children and teenagers. Participants will also be cared for right after the race: students from the physiotherapy school of the Heidelberg Academy for Health Professions of Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD) will be offering a free massage for all participants in the regatta village. In addition to an athletic challenge, the focus is on having fun and exercising to contribute to the fight against cancer. The Living with Cancer Foundation aims to improve the quality of life of people with cancer through exercise and sport. The nationwide Rowing Against Cancer initiative supports this goal and promotes therapy-accompanying sports and exercise programs in oncology facilities in Heidelberg and other locations.

Klaus Schrott, Chairman of the Board of the Living with Cancer Foundation, states: "With the Rowing Against Cancer regatta series, we combine our goal and hope to establish exercise and support programs as an integral part of oncological therapy. Regular exercise is just as important as medical and drug treatment for a better quality of life for cancer patients. We are very proud to host the 130th regatta in Heidelberg this year with our partners since hosting the first regatta in Mainz in 2005."

The proceeds of the regatta in Heidelberg will support the Exercise and Cancer program at the NCT Heidelberg. Dirk Jäger, Managing Director at the NCT Heidelberg and Head of Medical Oncology at the UKHD says: "Sport and exercise have many benefits, both during treatment and in rehabilitation after cancer. Exercise has been shown to help alleviate or prevent therapy-related symptoms, such as fatigue or sleep disturbances. With the donations' help, the extensive NCT Heidelberg exercise program, in which around 800 patients participate each year, can be continued and expanded."

National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg

The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg is a joint institution of the German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg University Hospital and German Cancer Aid. The NCT's goal is to link promising approaches from cancer research with patient care from diagnosis to treatment, aftercare and prevention. The interdisciplinary tumor outpatient clinic is the central element of the NCT. Here the patients benefit from an individual treatment plan prepared in a timely manner in interdisciplinary expert rounds, the so-called tumor boards. Participation in clinical studies provides access to innovative therapies. The NCT thereby acts as a pioneering platform that translates novel research results from the laboratory into clinical practice. The NCT cooperates with self-help groups and supports them in their work. Since 2015, a second site for the NCT beside Heidelberg has been under development in Dresden.

German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ)

With more than 3,000 employees, the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ) is Germany’s largest biomedical research institute. DKFZ scientists identify cancer risk factors, investigate how cancer progresses and develop new cancer prevention strategies. They are also developing new methods to diagnose tumors more precisely and treat cancer patients more successfully. The DKFZ's Cancer Information Service (KID) provides patients, interested citizens and experts with individual answers to questions relating to cancer.
To transfer promising approaches from cancer research to the clinic and thus improve the prognosis of cancer patients, the DKFZ cooperates with excellent research institutions and university hospitals throughout Germany:

  • National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT, 6 sites)
  • German Cancer Consortium (DKTK, 8 sites)
  • Hopp Children's Cancer Center (KiTZ) Heidelberg
  • Helmholtz Institute for Translational Oncology (HI-TRON Mainz) - A Helmholtz Institute of the DKFZ
  • DKFZ-Hector Cancer Institute at the University Medical Center Mannheim
  • National Cancer Prevention Center (jointly with German Cancer Aid)

The DKFZ is 90 percent financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and 10 percent by the state of Baden-Württemberg. The DKFZ is a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers.

Heidelberg University Hospital and Faculty of Medicine: Internationally Renowned Patient Care, Research and Teaching

Heidelberg University Hospital (Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg, UKHD) is one of the largest and most prestigious medical centers in Germany. The Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University (Medizinische Fakultät Heidelberg, MFHD) belongs to the internationally renowned biomedical research institutions in Europe. Both institutions have the common goal of developing new therapies and implementing them rapidly for patients. Heidelberg University Hospital and the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University employs around 14.500 employees and is committed to providing trainings and qualifications. Every year, around 86,000 patients and more than 1.100.000 outpatient cases are treated in more than 50 clinical departments with almost 2.500 beds. Together with the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ) and the German Cancer Aid, the UKHD established the first National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) in Heidelberg. The goal is to provide care at the highest level as an oncology center of excellence and to rapidly transfer promising approaches from cancer research to the hospital. In addition, the UKHD operates in partnership with the DKFZ and the University of Heidelberg the Hopp Children’s Cancer center Heidelberg (KiTZ), a unique and nationally known therapy and research center for oncological and hematological diseases in children and adolescents. The Heidelberg Curriculum Medicinale (HeiCuMed) is one of the top medical training programs in Germany. Currently, there are about 4.000 future physicians studying in Heidelberg.
