On September 9 at 9 a.m., the motto is "Attention - go!" again: for the 12th time, the Living with Cancer Foundation (Stiftung Leben mit Krebs), the Rowing Society Heidelberg (Rudergesellschaft Heidelberg 1898 e.V., RGH), and the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg will jointly host the charity regatta Rowing against Cancer on the Neckar River. In addition to exciting rowing competitions, there will be a varied program for visitors on the Neckar meadow (Neckarwiese) in Heidelberg. The proceeds will go to the patient program Exercise and Cancer at the NCT Heidelberg.
The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg is a joint institution of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD).
In the best tradition, beginners and professional rowers, patients, relatives, as well as medical and nursing staff, will row for a good cause at the charity event Rowing against Cancer on the Neckar River. The accompanying program offers culinary delights for the whole family, as well as a variety of informational opportunities and hands-on activities. Patrons of the event are Manfred Lautenschläger, founder and Honorary Chairman of the Supervisory Board of MLP SE, and the Lord Mayor of Heidelberg, Eckart Würzner.
The focus is on the sporting competitions with the gig double fours, which start at 9 a.m. The goal is to be the first boat to reach the finish line after 300 meters and thus qualify for the final races in the afternoon. Different teams (women, men, mixed teams) will compete in the preliminary and hope heats, with experienced RGH members acting as helmsmen.
A special race will take place at 12:40 p.m.: Athletes from Team Paris of the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region will compete. Antonia Nake is the strongest rower on board, who won gold in the double four at the Junior Women's World Championships in Paris at the beginning of August. Among those rowing with her are boxer Irina Schönberger, bronze medalist at the European Games in Krakow in June, and track and field athlete Hannah Mergenthaler, who competed in the 4x400-meter relay in Tokyo. They will compete against the team of long-time patron and supporter Manfred Lautenschläger. His boat also has a top-class line-up as three cancer experts support him: Jürgen Debus, Medical Director of the Clinic for Radiology and Radiotherapy at the UKHD, Dirk Jäger, Managing Director at the NCT Heidelberg and Head of Medical Oncology at the UKHD, and Andreas Kulozik, Director "Clinical Pediatric Oncology" Hopp Children's Tumor Center Heidelberg.
Not only on water but also on land, visitors and participants are offered a varied program. In the regatta village on the Neckar meadow, there will be various foods, interesting information, and participation booths, as well as various activities for children, which the association OnkoAktiv and further action partners supervise. The physiotherapy school of the Academy for Health Professions Heidelberg of the UKHD will also be present, whose students will offer free massages for the rowers after the competitions. For the afternoon, the ActiveOncoKids network is organizing a rowing competition for affected children and youth.
The focus of the charity event is to make exercise visible as a contribution to the fight against cancer. Starting fees, sponsorships, and donations will be used to provide sports and exercise programs for cancer patients. Klaus Schrott, Chairman of the Board of the Living with Cancer Foundation, says: "With Rowing Against Cancer, we want to establish sports programs as an integral part of oncological treatment so that all patients can participate in one of the programs and thus actively improve their therapy."
Dirk Jäger, Managing Director at the NCT Heidelberg and Head of Medical Oncology at the UKHD, says: "The proceeds from the regatta will enable us to expand the Exercise and Cancer program at the NCT Heidelberg further and offer patients comprehensive sports and exercise therapy advice and support. Structured physical training has shown to help reduce or even prevent complications and side effects during or after cancer treatment."

National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg
The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg is a joint institution of the German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg University Hospital and German Cancer Aid. The NCT's goal is to link promising approaches from cancer research with patient care from diagnosis to treatment, aftercare and prevention. The interdisciplinary tumor outpatient clinic is the central element of the NCT. Here the patients benefit from an individual treatment plan prepared in a timely manner in interdisciplinary expert rounds, the so-called tumor boards. Participation in clinical studies provides access to innovative therapies. The NCT thereby acts as a pioneering platform that translates novel research results from the laboratory into clinical practice. The NCT cooperates with self-help groups and supports them in their work. Since 2015, a second site for the NCT beside Heidelberg has been under development in Dresden.
German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ)
With more than 3,000 employees, the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ) is Germany’s largest biomedical research institute. DKFZ scientists identify cancer risk factors, investigate how cancer progresses and develop new cancer prevention strategies. They are also developing new methods to diagnose tumors more precisely and treat cancer patients more successfully. The DKFZ's Cancer Information Service (KID) provides patients, interested citizens and experts with individual answers to questions relating to cancer.
To transfer promising approaches from cancer research to the clinic and thus improve the prognosis of cancer patients, the DKFZ cooperates with excellent research institutions and university hospitals throughout Germany:

Heidelberg University Hospital and Faculty of Medicine: Internationally Renowned Patient Care, Research and Teaching
Heidelberg University Hospital (Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg, UKHD) is one of the largest and most prestigious medical centers in Germany. The Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University (Medizinische Fakultät Heidelberg, MFHD) belongs to the internationally renowned biomedical research institutions in Europe. Both institutions have the common goal of developing new therapies and implementing them rapidly for patients. Heidelberg University Hospital and the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University employs around 14.500 employees and is committed to providing trainings and qualifications. Every year, around 86,000 patients and more than 1.100.000 outpatient cases are treated in more than 50 clinical departments with almost 2.500 beds.
Together with the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ) and the German Cancer Aid, the UKHD established the first National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) in Heidelberg. The goal is to provide care at the highest level as an oncology center of excellence and to rapidly transfer promising approaches from cancer research to the hospital. In addition, the UKHD operates in partnership with the DKFZ and the University of Heidelberg the Hopp Children’s Cancer center Heidelberg (KiTZ), a unique and nationally known therapy and research center for oncological and hematological diseases in children and adolescents.
The Heidelberg Curriculum Medicinale (HeiCuMed) is one of the top medical training programs in Germany. Currently, there are about 4.000 future physicians studying in Heidelberg.
