13th Heidelberg Cancer Patient Day: Strategies against Cancer

Patients ask, experts answer: The annual Cancer Patient Day at the NCT has by now become a fixed institution in the Rhein-Neckar Region. When the event takes place for the 13th time on April 1st this year, the organizers are expecting more than 600 participants. This year’s motto is “Strategies against Cancer.” Doctors and scientists will present proven and new cancer treatment methods to cancer patients and their families. After a morning of presentations, the visitors will be able to pose questions on more specific cancer types to a panel of experts and representatives of self-help groups. Heidelberg’s mayor, professor Eckart Würzner, and the cancer association of Baden-Württemberg are sponsoring the event. Admission to the event is free.

The NCT Heidelberg is a joint institution of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the Heidelberg University Hospital and the German Cancer Aid.

“We would like to invite all cancer patients, their families, and any other people interested in finding out more, to our now traditional Cancer Patient Day, in order to present to them the newest developments in all fields of cancer research,” says professor Dirk Jäger, medical director at the NCT Heidelberg. Jäger will be speaking about these new developments in the opening talk at the 13th Heidelberg Cancer Patient Day on Saturday, April 1st, at 10 AM. Afterwards, professors Jürgen Debus, Alexis Ulrich, and Boris Radeleff will be speaking on treatment methods in radiation therapy and surgery.

Ensuring quality of life, despite cancer: That is the topic of the presentations beginning at 11:50 AM. Every type of cancer and cancer therapy can sometimes result in severe exhaustion. What to do in such cases will be the subject of professor Michael Thomas’ talk. A specialist for thoracic oncology, he will be speaking on strategies for dealing with fatigue. Following that, Günter Kupke and Dr. Imad Maatouk will answer questions on the topic “Cancer and Sexuality”: Why can cancer affect sexuality? How can those affected cope with it? Is it helpful to speak about it to someone? Where can one find information and support?

After the lunch break, specialists from various fields will report new findings. These can then be discussed in more detail in the following panel discussions with doctors, counselling services, and representatives of self-help groups. There will be a total of eight topics: 1. Breast cancer and gynecological tumors; 2. Gastrointestinal (esophageal, stomach, colon) and neuroendocrinal tumors; 3. Prostate carcinomas and urogenital tumors; 4. Head-neck/ thoracic tumors and neurooncology; 5. Skin cancer; 6. Leukemia, lymphomas and multiple myeloma; 7. Sarcomas, bone- and soft tissue tumors, CUP; 8. Counselling services at the NCT.

Stalls from various self-help groups and cancer-related organizations as well as the cancer information service at the DKFZ will be set up in the foyer.

Once again this year, Heidelberg‘s mayor professor Eckart Würzner and the Cancer Association of Baden-Württemberg will sponsor the event. “I would like to thank the NCT for the informative offer and I recommend everyone to stop by on April 1st.“

The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg
The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg is a joint institution of the German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg University Hospital and German Cancer Aid. The NCT's goal is to link promising approaches from cancer research with patient care from diagnosis to treatment, aftercare and prevention. The interdisciplinary tumor outpatient clinic is the central element of the NCT. Here the patients benefit from an individual treatment plan prepared in a timely manner in interdisciplinary expert rounds, the so-called tumor boards. Participation in clinical studies provides access to innovative therapies. The NCT thereby acts as a pioneering platform that translates novel research results from the laboratory into clinical practice. The NCT cooperates with self-help groups and supports them in their work. Since 2015, a second site for the NCT beside Heidelberg has been under development in Dresden.

The German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ)
The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) with its more than 3,000 employees is the largest biomedical research institute in Germany. At DKFZ, more than 1,000 scientists investigate how cancer develops, identify cancer risk factors and endeavor to find new strategies to prevent people from getting cancer. They develop novel approaches to make tumor diagnosis more precise and treatment of cancer patients more successful. The staff of the Cancer Information Service (KID) offers information about the widespread disease of cancer for patients, their families, and the general public. Jointly with Heidelberg University Hospital, DKFZ has established the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg, where promising approaches from cancer research are translated into the clinic. In the German Consortium for Translational Cancer Research (DKTK), one of six German Centers for Health Research, DKFZ maintains translational centers at seven university partnering sites. Combining excellent university hospitals with high-profile research at a Helmholtz Center is an important contribution to improving the chances of cancer patients. DKFZ is a member of the Helmholtz Association of National Research Centers, with ninety percent of its funding coming from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the remaining ten percent from the State of Baden-Württemberg.

Heidelberg University Hospital and Medical Faculty Heidelberg
