EU project launched: JANE-2 strengthens Europe-wide collaboration on cancer

The JANE-2 project aims to create seven Europe-wide competence networks that are currently working on important topics in oncology:
- complex and poor-prognosis cancers
- palliative cancer care;
- survivorship
- personalized primary and secondary prevention
- omics technologies
- hi-tech medical resources
- adolescents and young adult patients with tumours
Further progress in these fields also requires greater harmonization in the EU, collaboration between health and research institutions, and strong scientific and technological exchange. This is to be achieved with the help of the new competence networks within JANE-2.
The EU is funding the project with 40.5 million euros from the EU4Health program over four years. 121 partners from 29 European countries are participating. This makes JANE-2 one of the largest joint efforts to combat cancer. The kick-off took place in Milan, Italy.
Stefan Fröhling, Managing Director at the NCT Heidelberg and Head of Translational Medical Oncology at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), is participating in the Omics Technologies Competence Network. The “Omics” branch of science includes genomics, which examines the entire genome and thus considers very large amounts of data. Ute Mons, head of the Primary Cancer Prevention division at the DKFZ, is also involved in JANE-2 through the Competence Network for Personalized Primary and Secondary Prevention.
