Coronavirus: Notes for patients and information

Since December 2019, the newly created virus SARS-CoV-2 from the corona virus family has been spreading. At this point we inform about protective measures for cancer patients, measures at the NCT Heidelberg and Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD) to minimize the risk of infection and provide general information.

Measures at the NCT Heidelberg and Heidelberg University Hospital

Regulations on visiting hours and the accompaniment of outpatients

Due to the general situation, the NCT Heidelberg and the entire Heidelberg University Hospital have issued a ban on visiting and accompanying patients and staff in order to protect patients and staff from the corona virus SARS-CoV-2.

The following exceptions apply:

  • members of patients in the palliative ward (1 person per day)
  • mother/father of a sick child
  • accompanying a patient admitted to the emergency room
  • accompanying an elderly, frail or demented patient
  • for urgent medical reasons - the relative/visitor must clarify this with the ward team by telephone

Visitors are requested to report to the clinic gates; the side entrances will be closed.

With these measures, the University Hospital is helping to minimize the risk of infection and the spread of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.

Appointments for a second opinion at the NCT Heidelberg
Please note that in view of the current dynamics of the spread of SARS-CoV-2 ("coronavirus"), some health care measures are necessary to minimize the risk of infection, among others, for oncological patients. Additional visits to health care facilities must be minimized, which has an impact on the appointment of second opinions. For this reason, we are currently not always able to make second opinion appointments for patients and patients who are already receiving oncological care abroad. Each request is examined individually by our physicians and doctors. Patients and patients with newly diagnosed cancer and/or patients and patients with an urgent indication for treatment at our centre are not affected by this measure.

Hygiene rules
As with influenza and other acute respiratory tract infections, the so-called "coughing and sneezing etiquette", good hand hygiene and distance from the sick (approx. 1 to 2 metres) should also make transmission of the new coronavirus significantly more difficult. This means: wash hands frequently and thoroughly and dry them carefully. When sneezing or coughing, do not hold your hand, but cough up the crook of your arm or hold a disposable handkerchief in front of your mouth. Please dispose of used handkerchiefs immediately in the nearest waste bin. Please understand that for your and our safety we currently do not offer a handshake.
