Only a few weeks until the start of the 7th NCT Charity Run in Heidelberg on July 13. The National Center for Tumor Diseases Heidelberg (NCT) is expecting 5,000 people to take part. Over 2,500 runners have already registered. Participants can choose between the circuit run over 2.7 kilometers, a 10k route, and the half marathon distance run. The day’s events are not about records or performance, but rather setting an example and supporting cancer research at the NCT Heidelberg.

The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg is a joint institution of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), Heidelberg University Hospital (HUH) and German Cancer Aid.

The NCT Run has become the largest charity run in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. The proceeds benefit cancer research projects at the NCT Heidelberg. The event draws many runners who want to make an important contribution to cancer research in each distance category either individually or in teams. Due to its huge popularity of the circuit run, the number of participants for this part has been limited to 2,500 runners for the first time. The organizers therefore recommend registering early for the 2.7-kilometer route. There is no limit to the number of participants in the half marathon or the 10k run.

“Once again the theme is NCT RUNning against Cancer and at the same time conveys an important part of the message. Not only do we want to make a statement against cancer, but also set an example for healthy lifestyle and camaraderie. Anyone can take part, and everyone can help. The run is for anyone who would like to support the NCT or assist others. “Everyone is welcome, whether slow or fast, as an individual or in a team with colleagues, family, and friends,” says Stefan Fröhling, Managing Director of the NCT Heidelberg.
 
The starting point for all participants for the first time will be the main square in front of the central cafeteria Im Neuenheimer Feld 304. There participants will find all the necessary booths for the runners, from registration to dressing rooms, as well as the festival sites during and after the run. The starting gun for the half marathon and the 10-kilometer route is 7:00 p.m., while the circuit run begins at 7:15 p.m.

Registration
Everyone who registers by June 24 will be sent a personalized start number between July 2 to 12 to the address they have provided. Whoever registers after June 24 can pick up their start numbers on July 13 on the main square in front of the central cafeteria (Im Neuenheimer Feld 304) or two days before the event at NCT Heidelberg (Im Neuenheimer Feld 460). Online registration (www.nct-lauf.de) closes on July 11. For last-minute registration, the organizers also offer on-site registration the day of the event.

Organization and aid stations
The route for the half marathon and the 10-kilometer race have been adjusted due to the different starting point of the NCT Run. Both courses are now measured in accordance with the stipulations of the German Athletics Federation (DLV). Even if the sporting performance is not the focus of the NCT Run, the run times can still be compiled in a leaderboard as the race complies with DLV standards. The aid stations have also been arranged according to DLV standards, as there will be seven stations for the half marathon participants on the route. A new feature this year is the sports event agency M3, which among other things organizes the SRH Twilight Marathon in Mannheim and Ludwigshafen as well as the GELITA Trail Marathon in Heidelberg and will provide for ideal sporting conditions. Also for the first time, there will a “runners heaven”, in which the athletes can receive care and provisions after finishing the run.

Supporter out of conviction
As in previous years, corporate partners are needed for financial support for a charity event of this magnitude as well as to create incentives. As a supporter of the cause out of conviction, the company SAP has offered to be the sponsor of this year’s run. The software company based in Walldorf, a project partner of the NCT, will match every lap with a contribution of €2.50 up to a maximum number of 5,200 laps. Roche Pharma AG as well as Sparkasse Heidelberg have once again signed on as partners. We were able to gain new sponsors in NCT Best Water Technologies (BWT), Abbvie and the Bitburger brewery, which will provide the runners with non-alcoholic beverages in “runners heaven”.

Electronic timing for all running routes
All routes will feature electronic timing. The start and finish this year is not at NCT Heidelberg, but rather in front of the central cafeteria. Runners will be provided with drinks at supply stations along the three routes.

Supporting program
For those who want to simply be a spectator to cheer on friends, family and colleagues, this year there is also an attractive social program with various culinary offerings. The band “The Wright Thing” will provide musical entertainment starting at 7:45 p.m. The event will be presented and announced by Tom Haberer.

Entry fees
The entry fee for the circuit run is €16.50 for adults and €5.00 for school pupils. A start number for the 10k run is €25.00 (before June 24, then €28.00), and participation in the NCT half marathon costs €30.00 (before 24 June, then €35.00).

Celebrity support
The NCT Run will be supported two-fold from the world of politics. The Baden-Württemberg Minister of Science, Theresia Bauer, as well as the Mayor of Heidelberg, Eckart Würzner, will be on hand as patrons of the run.

National Center for Tumor Diseases Heidelberg (NCT)
The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg is a joint institution of the German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg University Hospital and German Cancer Aid. The NCT’s goal is to link promising approaches from cancer research with patient care from diagnosis to treatment, aftercare and prevention. The interdisciplinary tumor outpatient clinic is the central element of the NCT. Here the patients benefit from an individual treatment plan prepared in a timely manner in interdisciplinary expert rounds, so-called tumor boards. Participation in clinical studies provides access to innovative therapies. The NCT thereby acts as a pioneering platform that translates novel research results from the laboratory into clinical practice. The NCT cooperates with self-help groups and supports them in their work. In 2015, the NCT Heidelberg established a partner location in Dresden.

German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ)
The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) with its more than 3,000 employees is the largest biomedical research institute in Germany. At DKFZ, more than 1,000 scientists investigate how cancer develops, identify cancer risk factors and endeavor to find new strategies to prevent people from getting cancer. They develop novel approaches to make tumor diagnosis more precise and treatment of cancer patients more successful.
The staff of the Cancer Information Service (KID) offers information about the widespread disease of cancer for patients, their families, and the general public. Together with Heidelberg University Hospital, DKFZ has established the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg, where promising approaches from cancer research are translated into the clinic.
In the German Consortium for Translational Cancer Research (DKTK), one of six German Centers for Health Research, DKFZ maintains translational centers at seven university partnering sites. Combining excellent university hospitals with high-profile research at a Helmholtz Center is an important contribution to improving the chances of cancer patients. DKFZ is a member of the Helmholtz Association of National Research Centers, with ninety percent of its funding coming from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the remaining ten percent from the State of Baden-Württemberg.

Heidelberg University Hospital
Heidelberg University Hospital is one of the most important medical centers in Germany; Heidelberg University’s Medical Faculty is one of Europe's most prestigious biomedical research facilities. Their shared objective is the development of innovative diagnostics and treatments and their prompt implementation for the benefit of the patient. The hospital and faculty employ approximately 13,000 individuals and are involved in training and qualification.
