The protein revolution: NCT Heidelberg in 3sat programme Wissen hoch 2

Without proteins, there would be no life: they provide the building material for muscles and organs, regulate cell growth, fight pathogens and transport oxygen into the blood. The human body forms 20,000 different proteins from 20 amino acids.

For a long time, they were a mystery to science – until 2014, when the decoding of the proteome, the totality of all proteins, heralded a new era in medicine. This enables customised therapies to increase the chances of recovery for many diseases, including cancer.

The 3sat programme ‘Wissen hoch 2 - The Protein Revolution’ explains how molecular precision oncology integrates the systematic analysis of proteins. It is thus possible to characterise individual cancers more comprehensively and to derive specific therapies.

The film team visited the NCT Heidelberg and the DKFZ laboratories to film the footage. Stefan Fröhling, Managing Director of the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg and Head of the Division of Translational Medical Oncology at the DKFZ, is interviewed in the film, and a patient and other colleagues also have their say. 3sat will broadcast ‘Wissen hoch 2 – The Protein Revolution’ on 23 January at 8:15 p.m. The video is also available in the media library. The part from Heidelberg starts at minute 11:50.
