8th charity regatta “Rowing against Cancer” on September 9th at 9.00 am / Registration is open / Contributions will benefit “movement and cancer” program of the NCT
On September 9th, the charity regatta “Rowing against Cancer” will take place for the 8th time, organized by the Foundation “Living with Cancer”, the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg and the Rowing Society of Heidelberg 1898 e.V. (RGH). Additionally, the event will be supported by the Manfred Lautenschläger -Stiftung for the first time this year. As of now, online registration is possible at http://rgk-heidelberg.rudernonline.de. Registration deadline will be July 31st. Next to the water-race, there will be a variety of entertainment for visitors on the Neuenheimer Neckarwiese. Proceeds will benefit the patient program “Movement and Cancer” of the NCT.
The NCT Heidelberg is a joint institution of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the Heidelberg University Hospital and the German Cancer Aid.
The charity regatta “Rowing against Cancer” is entering the 8th round: on Saturday, September 9th, patients, professionals, physicians and rowing-novices will row for the good cause. The races on the Neckar will start at 9.00 am. The event is under the patronage of Major Professor Eckart Würzner of Heidelberg and Dr. h. c. Manfred Lautenschläger, founder and deputy chairman of the supervisory board of the MLP AG.
Teams of four can register via http://rgk-heidelberg.rudernonline.de until July 31st. Each rowing team will cover the 300 meter distance between the Theodor-Heuss-Bridge and the Ernst-Walter- Bridge at least twice on the day of the regatta. “Beginners are as welcome as professional rowers”, encourages Sönke Hartung-Rey, Manager of the Rowing Society Heidelberg 1898 e.V. (RGH). The RGH supports the teams in their preparation with three free training sessions. During the race, employees of the society will stir and keep the boats on course. The registration fee amounts to 300 Euro (donation of 200 Euro and 100 Euro of costs contribution per boat/team).
With the sport event “Rowing against Cancer” we want to support as many patients as possible to be physical active on a regular basis”, says Klaus Schrott, Chairman of the Foundation Living with Cancer. Therefore, the Foundation cooperates nationwide with oncological therapy centers and local rowing clubs. A concept that proves to be successful: since 2005 more than 21.000 people participated in over 80 regattas at 23 locations all over Germany. “Rowing against Cancer” is, hence, the largest popular-sports-event in Germany. This year, the regatta will take place at ten other locations next to Heidelberg.
Proceeds of the regatta in Heidelberg will benefit the program “Moving and Cancer” at the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg. About 650 cancer patients participate in the NCT sport programs each year. “Cancer treatment is physically and psychological debilitating. Movement can contribute to tone down or avoid complications and side effects during and after cancer treatment. Donations will contribute to expand the sports program at the NCT and to further improve the life-quality of cancer patients”, explains Professor Dirk Jäger, Medical Director of the NCT Heidelberg.
The regatta will be supported financially and organizationally by the Manfred Lautenschläger-Stiftung for the first time this year. In cooperation with the Tour of Hope and the Radtreff Rhein-Neckar, two other charity events, proceeds, benefitting cancer patients, should rise.
For everyone who prefers the land, there will be a variety of entertainment offered on the Neckarwiesen. Information booths, entertainment for children and various stage-events will guarantees a diverse day for the entire family. Two former patients of the NCT, Sarah Nellen and Christian Ehrhard, invite to participate in their initiative “Bike & Run” as part of “Rowing against Cancer”. People interested can either join in a 10-km run or bike 23-km along the Neckar. The organizing committee, the Foundation Living with Cancer, the RGH and the NCT will take care of the culinary well-being of all visitors as well.
Moving for a good purpose also took place prior to the regatta. On June 24th der Children Sport School KISS of the TSV Handschuhsheim 1886 e.V. organized a charity run, benefitting the NCT program “Moving and Cancer”. The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg
The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg is a joint institution of the German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg University Hospital and German Cancer Aid. The NCT's goal is to link promising approaches from cancer research with patient care from diagnosis to treatment, aftercare and prevention. The interdisciplinary tumor outpatient clinic is the central element of the NCT. Here the patients benefit from an individual treatment plan prepared in a timely manner in interdisciplinary expert rounds, the so-called tumor boards. Participation in clinical studies provides access to innovative therapies. The NCT thereby acts as a pioneering platform that translates novel research results from the laboratory into clinical practice. The NCT cooperates with self-help groups and supports them in their work. 2015 the NCT Heidelberg established a partner location in Dresden.
The German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ)
The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) with its more than 3,000 employees is the largest biomedical research institute in Germany. At DKFZ, more than 1,000 scientists investigate how cancer develops, identify cancer risk factors and endeavor to find new strategies to prevent people from getting cancer. They develop novel approaches to make tumor diagnosis more precise and treatment of cancer patients more successful. The staff of the Cancer Information Service (KID) offers information about the widespread disease of cancer for patients, their families, and the general public. Jointly with Heidelberg University Hospital, DKFZ has established the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg, where promising approaches from cancer research are translated into the clinic. In the German Consortium for Translational Cancer Research (DKTK), one of six German Centers for Health Research, DKFZ maintains translational centers at seven university partnering sites. Combining excellent university hospitals with high-profile research at a Helmholtz Center is an important contribution to improving the chances of cancer patients. DKFZ is a member of the Helmholtz Association of National Research Centers, with ninety percent of its funding coming from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the remaining ten percent from the State of Baden-Württemberg.

Heidelberg University Hospital is one of the most important medical centers in Germany; Heidelberg University's Medical Faculty is one of Europe's most prestigious biomedical research facilities. Their shared objective is the development of innovative diagnostics and treatments and their prompt implementation for the benefit of the patient. The hospital and faculty employ approximately 12 600 individuals and are involved in training and qualification. Every year approximately 66 000 patients are treated as inpatients or day patients in more than 50 specialized clinical departments with about 1 900 beds, with more than 1 million patients being treated as outpatients. The Heidelberg Curriculum Medicinale (HeiCuMed) is at the forefront of medical training in Germany. At present approx. 3500 prospective physicians are studying in Heidelberg.
