With Heart and Hand: Heart-Shaped Pillows for Breast Cancer Patients at NCT Heidelberg

With around 80 hand-sewn heart-shaped pillows, members of the Heidelberg International Women’s Club (IWC) and students from Schiller International University have once again shown their solidarity with breast cancer patients. A group of the seamstresses involved personally delivered the lovingly handcrafted pillows to NCT Heidelberg. Regina Hohmann from the fundraising department accepted the donation. “We are very pleased that the Heidelberg International Women’s Club and the students from Schiller International University have been supporting our patients with these heart-shaped pillows for several years now. Many thanks to everyone involved for their ongoing commitment,” says Regina Hohmann. Andrea Vinzens, Head of the NCT Outpatient Clinics, and her team are responsible for distributing the pillows to the patients.

The Heidelberg International Women’s Club has been supporting breast cancer patients at the NCT Heidelberg since 2022. Together with the students, the club members regularly organize sewing sessions on the university campus. Using fabrics and sewing supplies they bring, they create personalized gifts intended to bring joy to patients during their illness. The heart-shaped pillows can be placed under the arm and thus provide relief, for example, after breast surgery. At the same time, they are a sign of compassion: Each pillow comes with a personal message from the students and club members.

Since the initiative began four years ago, a total of about 450 heart-shaped pillows have been made in this way, and the next sewing session is already planned for November. The gatherings bring together people of different generations and backgrounds. For some, personal experiences with cancer in their own lives are the reason they get involved. All heart-shaped pillow donors are united by a desire to contribute to the community.
