Using needles, thread, and a lot of dedication, eighth-grade students at Leintalschule Schwaigern made over 40 heart-shaped pillows for breast cancer patients and donated them to NCT Heidelberg. The hand-sewn pillows, which can make everyday life easier for patients after breast cancer surgery, were created during AES class (Everyday Culture, Nutrition, Social Studies).

Along with the heart-shaped pillows, the students designed personal cards with good wishes for the patients. The supervising teacher reported that it was particularly motivating for the students to create something that has a concrete purpose and can directly help those affected. The students also showed great dedication and empathy in writing the personal messages.

The distinctive heart shape with the elongated “ears” was developed specifically for breast cancer patients. Placed under the arm, the pillows can relieve pressure on the armpit, promote lymphatic drainage, and reduce pain.

At the handover, Andrea Vinzens and Cedric Sauer, patient management team leaders, thanked the students for their dedication. Afterward, they gave the class a tour of the NCT Heidelberg, introduced the patient center, provided insights into the care of cancer patients, and answered the students’ questions.

For the Leintalschule, the heart-shaped pillow campaign has now become a lovely tradition: Last year, students donated pillows they had sewn themselves to the NCT Heidelberg as well. With this year’s donation, they are continuing their social commitment and once again making a tangible contribution to the well-being of breast cancer patients.
