Connect Highlights: How it all began with NCT Heidelberg

NCT Heidelberg has now been in existence for over 20 years. Well established as an excellent facility, NCT Heidelberg meets the needs of its patients in an exemplary manner. The anniversary provides a good opportunity to look back on the exciting beginnings: How did it all begin, what obstacles did the founders have to overcome, and what milestones did the NCT Heidelberg achieve in its early years?
It began with a sketch by Harald zur Hausen, then director of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and later winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine. It described the idea of establishing Germany's first holistic cancer center in Heidelberg, modeled on the US Comprehensive Cancer Centers. The goal was to create a center where cancer research and therapy are closely linked and work together to continuously improve each other.
