Fun and excitement guaranteed: Rowing against cancer charity regatta on September 7 in Heidelberg

For the 13th time, exciting races and good entertainment will be on offer on September 7 on the Neckar and along its banks in Heidelberg: The first heats of the charity regatta Rowing against Cancer - jointly organized by the Foundation Living with Cancer, the Rowing Society Heidelberg 1898 e.V. (RGH) and the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg - will start at 9 am. Parallel to the rowing competitions, there will be a varied program for visitors in the regatta village and on the stage. The proceeds will benefit the Exercise and Cancer Patient Program at the NCT Heidelberg.

The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg is a joint institution of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD), Thoraxklinik-Heidelberg and the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University.

Rowing together for a good cause - that is the aim and the great fun of Rowing against Cancer. The charity regatta organized by the Foundation Leben mit Krebs, the Rudergesellschaft Heidelberg 1898 e.V. (RGH) and the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg is being held for the 13th time this year. As always, beginners and experienced water sports enthusiasts, patients, relatives and medical and nursing staff will be rowing on the Neckar.

In sporting terms, everything revolves around the races in the gig double fours. The boats start below the Theodor Heuss Bridge and then travel 300 meters downstream to the finish line. The winning boats in all heats qualify directly for the finals in the afternoon, and there are also hope heats that offer amateur rowers a second chance. In order to keep as straight a course as possible, experienced RGH members take on the role of helmsmen on the boats.

An attractive supporting program for the whole family accompanies the races in the regatta village and on the stage on the Neckarwiese in Neuenheim. This includes a wide range of culinary delights and many information stands as well as hands-on activities - from the presentation of the Patient Advisory Board at the NCT Heidelberg and many self-help groups for cancer patients to the rowing ergometer and face painting for children. Patrons of the event are Manfred Lautenschläger, founder and Honorary Chairman of the Supervisory Board of MLP SE, and Heidelberg's Lord Mayor Eckart Würzner.

Back from the Olympic Games and also present in the Regatta Village is Team Paris from the Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar. From 2 p.m., long jumper Mikaelle Assani, canoeist Saeid Fazloula, pole vaulter Oleg Zernikel and field hockey player Sonja Zimmermann will talk about their experiences at the Olympics. Afterwards, they and other athletes will be available to sign autographs.

The aim of the charity event is to make exercise visible as a contribution to the fight against cancer. Entry fees, sponsorship money and donations will be used to provide sports and exercise programs for cancer patients. Thomas Bellut, Chairman of the Board of the Living with Cancer Foundation, says: "Rowing against cancer provides an impetus for anchoring sports programs in oncological treatment. If possible, all patients should take part in a program and actively improve their therapy."

Dirk Jäger, Managing Director at the NCT Heidelberg and Head of Medical Oncology at the UKHD, says: "The proceeds from the regatta will be used to further expand the Exercise and Cancer program at the NCT Heidelberg. This will enable us to offer our patients extensive sports and exercise therapy activities that have been proven to help reduce or even prevent complications and side effects during or after cancer treatment."

The NCT Heidelberg is therefore leading the way in transferring new research results from the laboratory to the clinic. The NCT Heidelberg, founded in 2004, is part of the NCT with further sites in Berlin, Dresden, SouthWest (Tübingen-Stuttgart/Ulm), WERA (Würzburg, Erlangen, Regensburg, Augsburg) and West (Essen/Cologne).

German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ)

With more than 3,000 employees, the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ) is Germany’s largest biomedical research institute. They are also developing new methods to diagnose tumors more precisely and treat cancer patients more successfully. The DKFZ's Cancer Information Service (KID) provides patients, interested citizens and experts with individual answers to questions relating to cancer.

To transfer promising approaches from cancer research to the clinic and thus improve the prognosis of cancer patients, the DKFZ cooperates with excellent research institutions and university hospitals throughout Germany:

  • National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT, 6 sites)
  • German Cancer Consortium (DKTK, 8 sites)
  • Hopp Children's Cancer Center (KiTZ) Heidelberg
  • Helmholtz Institute for Translational Oncology (HI-TRON Mainz) - A Helmholtz Institute of the DKFZ
  • DKFZ-Hector Cancer Institute at the University Medical Center Mannheim
