Experimental and Translational Head and Neck Oncology

 

Our group/department has:

  • Unraveled HPV-related alterations in the DNA-methylome of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma and identified a gene promoter methylation signature that predicted the clinical outcome in three independent and international patient cohorts (Kostareli et al. J Clin Invest 2013)
  • Applied gene expression profiling with matched samples of primary and recurrent tumors derived from an orthotopic mouse model of oral carcinogenesis and identified differentially expressed genes that serve as prognostic biomarkers for treatment decision making  or promising drug targets for translational oncology (Koffler et al. Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol 2013; Acuna Sanhueza et al. BMC Cancer 2012)
  • Launched a prospective study on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients applying functional genomics to elucidate molecular mechanisms of treatment failure (HIPO-POP-019), and initiated an international research project focusing on integrative analysis of molecular and cellular mechanisms of treatment failure and tumor recurrence of head and neck cancer patients after surgery supported by SNF/DFG
  • The head of the research group has been appointed as coordinator of the newly established Section for Experimental and Translational Head and Neck Oncology at the University Hospital Heidelberg and is an elected board member of the Working Group Oncology of the German Society of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery
  • Elucidated cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the establishment and maintenance of acute and chronic inflammation with a specific focus on S100-RAGE signaling and its impact on skin (Leipold et al. J Invest Dermatol 2013; Riehl et al., BMC Genomics 2010), liver (Pusterla et al. 2013 Hepatology; Wiechert et al. 2012 Cell Commun Signal), and oral carcinogenesis (Mark et al., 2013 Histol Histopathol)
