Medical Physics in Radiology


Our group/department has:

  • Non-invasively measured the in vivo potassium and chloride concentration for the first time world-wide using 7 Tesla MRI (Umathum R et al. Radiology 2013 and Nagel A et al. Radiology 2014)
  • Expanded the theoretical modelling of Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer (CEST) imaging and provided the first direct in vitro observation of protein folding using this technique (Zaiss M et al. NMR Biomed 2014 and Zaiss M et al. NMR Biomed 2013)
  • Provided the theoretical foundation for and experimental verification of direct imaging of pore shape with magnetic resonance diffusion imaging (Kuder TA et al. Phys Rev Lett 2013)
  • Developed novel X-ray methodology allowing the acquisition of 3D, time-resolved images for interventional guidance without increasing radiation dose versus conventional 2D methods (Flach B et al. Med Phys 2013)
  • Designed and implemented the first plenoptic optical camera to be used in diagnostic imaging and used this system to create the world’s first MRI-compatible, non-contact optical imager for multimodality imaging (Cao L et al. Opt Express 2011)
  • Developed a modular contrast agent that enables use with multiple imaging technologies (e.g. PET and MRI) and extension to molecular patient-specific therapies (Braun K et al. Int J Med Sci 2014)
