Professor Christof von Kalle has been Director of the Department of Translational Oncology at NCT and at DKFZ since July 2005, and chairs the NCT Board of Directors. A physician scientist with a clinical background in hematology/oncology, he is an internationally renowned scientific leader in stem cell research, mutation analysis and gene transfer, with >90 high-impact publications. He heads the DKFZ Translational Cancer Research Topic, is vice chair of the DKFZ scientific committee (WiRa), coordinates German Ministry of Research program project grant iGENE, and is a steering committee member of program project grants funded by EU, DFG, BMBF, NIH and DKH, of DFG Excellence Network SPP 1230, the DKFZ Bayer Schering Alliance, the Helmholtz Immunotherapy Alliance and the German ICGC Consortium. Christof von Kalle currently serves as chair of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Network of Deutsche Krebshilfe. He coordinates overall NCT activities, with the primary goal of facilitating excellence in translational and clinical research at DKFZ and HUMS. He oversees review, distribution and governance of research funding programs at NCT and has been instrumental in obtaining structural grants for funding interdisciplinary, translational and early clinical research at NCT. His department contributes to clinical patient care and is home to internationally renowned research groups for stem cell research, molecular diagnostics and gene therapy, participating in one Excellence Cluster (
www.cellnetworks.uni-hd.de) and numerous excellence programs (SPP, SFB, Max Eder) of EU, DFG and DKH. His department has recruited a W3 professorship in Translational Hematology and Oncology (Hanno Glimm). Directing the NCT Area Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, Christof von Kalle positions NCT towards the clinical implementation of personalized oncology by individualized molecular characterization for every NCT patient.
