NCT Tissue Bank
The NCT Tissue Bank, (E. Herpel, Staff: 5, Institute of Pathology, Schirmacher) functions as a central resource and technology platform for the Heidelberg campus and provides access to frozen and paraffin-embedded normal and tumor tissues, related clinical data, high-end tissue-technology and comprehensive project management. It reports to a steering committee of participating institutions and has supported well over 550 research projects (completion rate >95 %).

NCT Tissue Bank activities include:

  • Harmonized standard operating protocols for sample preparation
  • Sample data management (platform, standards, and sharing of resources and data)
  • Harmonized project management,  systematic ethical and legal standards compliance
  • Logistics and statistical evaluation for joint projects
  • Quality control and bioresource management in multicenter projects

The NCT Tissue Bank, the first accredited tissue bank has contributed to international biobanking guidelines and serves as blueprint for other tumor banks (Dresden, Erlangen and Jena) and supports large-scale epidemiological projects (DACHS, ESTHER, EPIC, ColoCare, and the National Helmholtz Cohort).  Next, a centralized BioMaterial Bank (cBMB, Ulrich, Schirmacher) will unify the tumor- with biobanking activities of NCT and its DKFZ and HUMS partners.  Prospective SOP-driven collections of serum, plasma, cells, nucleic acids, stool and other biospecimen will integrate current collections with longitudinal clinical, experimental and meta-data, and will be key for translational research and development at NCT.
